Understanding What Each Exam Measures

SAT measures academic reasoning, math skills, and reading/writing ability. It's primarily used for US college admissions and merit scholarship consideration worldwide.

IELTS measures English language proficiency across reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It's required as an English proof by universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, and increasingly the US.

When to Prioritize the SAT

  • You are targeting US universities and merit scholarships
  • You are applying to South Korean universities (KAIST, POSTECH, SNU)
  • You want to demonstrate academic readiness beyond GPA
  • You are targeting scholarship programs that specifically value SAT scores

When to Prioritize IELTS

  • You are applying to UK, Australian, or Canadian universities
  • The US university you're targeting requires IELTS as an English proficiency proof
  • You need to meet a program's English requirement (many require 6.5+)

The Best Strategy: Both

For most ambitious Bangladeshi students, the gold standard is:

  • SAT: 1400+ — for scholarships and academic merit
  • IELTS: 7.0+ — for English proficiency proof

The good news: SAT English prep and IELTS prep overlap significantly. If you improve your SAT Reading & Writing score, your IELTS Reading and Writing scores improve naturally.

Simultaneous Preparation Tips

  1. Study SAT RW grammar rules — the same rules apply to IELTS Writing Task 1 and 2
  2. Build vocabulary through SAT vocab lists — high-band IELTS writing requires the same academic vocabulary
  3. Practice reading academic texts daily — benefits both SAT Reading and IELTS Academic Reading
  4. Dedicate separate time blocks for IELTS Speaking — this is unique to IELTS and has no SAT equivalent
  5. Take both exams within a 3-month window to leverage your preparation momentum

At DSAT School, we offer preparation programs for both SAT and IELTS, with a combined course option that maximizes overlap between the two.
